Sneha Basti is an oil-based enema used in Ayurveda for Vata disorders, providing nourishment, promoting bowel movement, and acting as a rejuvenative therapy.

Key ingredients
- Sesame oil or other suitable oil (e.g., castor oil, medicated oils based on specific conditions)

Adult dose
60-120 ml (2-4 ounces), adjusted based on individual constitution, age, and condition. Can be higher in specific protocols.
Pediatric dose
Variable, typically 30-60 ml.
Preparation steps
- Prepare the Basti equipment and medicated oil.
- Warm the medicated oil to body temperature.
- Position the patient on their left side with the left leg extended and the right leg flexed.
- Gently administer the warm medicated oil through the rectum using a Basti .
- Encourage the patient to retain the oil for the prescribed duration.
- After the retention period, allow the patient to evacuate their bowels.
Safety contraindications
- Acute infections, fever, loose stools, pregnancy, severe heart disease, or chronic kidney disease.
