Modern description

Bala Varti is a suppository/pessary used after the removal of a foreign body from the head. It is also beneficial for improving strength and immunity in infants and children, and in managing Vata imbalances.

Purpose

To be inserted after a foreign body has been removed from the head.

Indications

• Infant and child ailments, specifically to improve strength, immunity and in conditions associated with Vata imbalance like cough, cold, and digestive weakness. Also used for rectal prolapse and constipation in children

Adult dose

Not typically administered to adults. Dosage for children varies depending on age and condition, typically a small Varti (about 1/4 inch) can be inserted rectally, once or twice daily, under strict medical supervision.

Preparation steps

• Obtain Bala (Sida cordifolia) root and other specified ingredients.
• Clean the ingredients thoroughly and dry them under shade.
• Powder the Bala root and other ingredients separately.
• Mix the powdered ingredients in the prescribed ratio.
• Add a suitable binding agent like ghee or honey to make a paste.
• Roll the paste into small, cylindrical shapes to form Vartis (suppositories).
• Allow the Vartis to dry completely under shade.
• Store the Vartis in an airtight container, away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Safety contraindications

• Contraindicated in cases of diarrhea or dysentery.
